These tips spring from what I see successful business owners and entrepreneurs do and what I see who don’t meet their goals.

Below are the 10 things you need to do before starting a business

1.   Create a powerful message

Business owners should make it clear to the customers how you are solving their problems and why should they pay the price of the product. Also, the potential customers should know why will the business be financially and operationally successful.

2.   Funnel the customers and research the market

There are a lot of companies, that do not have the best product/service or are not the first to market, but still are very successful because of their mastered marketing and sales techniques.

Research your potential customer base, understand their buying habits, and funnel them accordingly.

By studying the simplicity as well as the complexity of similar businesses, owners can grow their customer base even through social media.

3.   Start small and then grow

Always start your business by self-funding, if possible. It can help in studying product/service by breaking it into segments and gaining some experience on the fund required for each segment.

Later, you can grow through institutional funding and borrowings.

4.   Go through your SWOT

Analyzing your organization's strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, and threats makes it clear for the business to run smoothly.

You should know when you need to engage an accountant, lawyer, web page designer, marketing specialist, or other professional. This will be the foundation of managing your business effectively.

5.   Surround yourself with advisors

Starting and growing a business is difficult, and more than half will fail within the initial years.

No business can sustain itself if the owner doesn’t get guidance in difficult times. Advisors can share their opinions on the situation and could possibly provide you with a solution for it.

6.   Seek a mentor

Finding the right mentor for your business can help you shape the business in a specific and experienced form. Mentorship is a guide to the solutions for the business.

If you are not sure where one can get mentors, you can also find mentors on sites like LinkedIn, by attending a local business meetup, or just asking around.

7.   Plan your business path

Before you start the plan, figure out what type of business you will have. Will it be a sole proprietorship, partnership, or corporation? Then put together your plan.

Don’t try to do everything at once either. Start by focusing on key components of a business plan. This way, having a written plan with forecasted results and projected goals is the best way to stay on track.

8.   Know your numbers

Having a good eye on the numbers which tell the position of your business can define your next actions to be taken. These include your sales, estimated profit, cash flow, start-up costs, and much more, depending on the nature of the business.

Using cost-effective tools such as email marketing and social media marketing can drive the phenomenal attraction of the public towards your business.

9.   Don’t work for entitlements at first

In a recent survey, 40 percent of small business owners said that they don’t take holidays or vacations and have their money flowing into the business.

Don’t lose patience and work with a great passion to earn the desired profits.

10.      Be passionate about what you are doing

Being a business owner can be very lonely and there is not enough time to accomplish everything.

You should refuel yourself by carrying out your work passionately and loving what you are doing. Remember why you started your business and let your passion drive you continuously.
